What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is often described as trauma therapy. In practice, it is a structured, evidence-based approach that supports the brain to process experiences that feel unresolved.

Many people say:
“I know it’s over, but it doesn’t feel over.”

When distressing experiences are not fully processed, they can continue to influence thoughts, emotions, and nervous system responses long after the event has passed.

EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess these memories in a gradual and contained way. Before any processing begins, we focus on stabilisation. You learn grounding and regulation skills first. The work is collaborative and paced carefully.

EMDR is not about reliving trauma. It is about allowing the nervous system to integrate what has felt stuck.

If you are considering trauma counselling on the Sunshine Coast or online, we can explore whether EMDR is appropriate for you.
